Ancient city of Jiaohe and Gaochang
the ancient city of Jiaohe (Yarkhoto) is located 10 kilometers west of Turpan. It is the largest, oldest and best-preserved earthen city in the world, with an area of 220,000 square meters. Jiaohe was the capital of state Cheshi. It was abandoned in the early 14th century, as was its prosperity of over 2000 years. The city remains intact in the harsh weather; the city wall, streets and temples can still be seen.

The ancient city of Gaochang located 46 kilometers southeast of Turpan. It was built in the first century B.C as the capital of state Gaochang and burnt down in 14th century A.D. The city ruin contains a large part of the city wall, two temples, a pagoda and the remain of royal palace complex. You can walk in this adobe city to enjoy the ancinet culture of the Silk Road.
