  Stone Forest

The Stone Forest, which covers an area of 11sqallare kilometers, lies 83 kilometers southeast of Kunming. The main nationality of the region is the Sani branch of the Yi tribes people. The stone forest is a collection of grey, limestone pillars, split by rain water and eroded to their present fanciful forms, the tallest model standing 30 meters. Marine fossils found in the area suggest that it was once under the sea about 270 million year ago. The larger formations have little like Baby Elephant, Baby Buffalo, Moon-Gazing Rhino, Sword pond.



 The Bamboo Temple

12 kilometers northwest of Kunming, this temple dates to the Tang dynasty. Burned down and rebuilt in the 15th century, it was restored from 1883 to 1890 when the abbot employed the master Sicuan sculptor Li Guangxiu and his apprentices to fashion 500 arhats.

These life-size clay figures are housed in three halls, there are 216 in the Tiantai hall, 216 in the Fanyin hall and 68 in the Daxiong Grand hall. The figures houses in Tiantai and Fanyin halls are located on the three tiers, of which those in the middle were made by his apprentices. Among them there are emperors, governors, warriors, scholars, beggars, farmers etc. it seems that each arhats is familiar to all of us and this shows originality in Li's artistic creation of the traditional arhats. The image that an embodies. The quintessence of Chan doctione. Every one is created equal and can become a Buddha through painstaking efforts.



 The Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is 7 kilometers of Kunming. The original model was carted off to Dali, the present one, with bronze pillar, ornate door frames, fittings and roofs, laid on a white marble foundation, dates from the Ming dynasty. It was enlarged by General Wu Sangui, who was dispatched by the Manchus in 1659 to quell the uprisings in the region. Wu bit hand that fed him-turned against the Manchus and set himself up as a rebel warlord, with the Golden Temple as his summer residence. The temple is 6.5 meters high, and estimated to weigh more than 200 tons. At the back is a 14-ton bronze bell, cast in 1423, China¡¯ third largest one.



 The Western Hills

15 kilometers west of Kunming, the Western Hills spread out across a long wedge of parkland on the western side of lake Dianchi. They're noted for a series of temples situated along a path up to the summit. The path up is approached from the north side and it's sleep. At the top point is Dragon Gate situated along a Cliffside, from where you'll get a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding countryside. The Western Hills are also known as the "Sleeping Beauty Hills" - a reference to the undulating contours resembling a reclining women with tresses of hair flowing into the lake. On the half way to the summit, is the Huating Tample, a country villa of the Nan Zhao kingdom, believed to have been first constructed in the 11th century, rebuilt in the 14th century, and extended in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The temple has some fine statues and excellent gardens.

The Sanqingge, the temple near the top of the mountain, was a country villa for a prince of the Yuan dynasty, and was later turned into a temple dedicated to the three main Taoist deities.

Further up is Dragon Gate, a group of grottoes, sculptures, corridors and pavilions hacked from the cliff between 1781 and 1853 by a Taoist monk and co-workers, who must have been hanging up there by their fingertips. The tunneling along the older cliff edge is so narrow that only one or two people can squeeze by at one time. One of the last grottoes is dedicated to the deity who assisted those preparing for imperial exams.



 The Birds and Flower Market

The Birds and Flower Market lies in Yongdao street, the center of Kunming. The market, with its distinctive characteristics, is full of old two-storied house. A multitude of shops and stores stand along the half kilometers long narrow street, with various kinds of commodities on show. The main commodities in the market are flowers, birds, pets and fish.

The market is also a treading center for various kinds of antiques like jade objects, inkslabs ancient coins, pottery etc. the area of market is the last reminder of old city of Kunming.

The market is filled with the scent of flowers and echoes with birds song all year round.
