The Ming Tombs (Shisanling)
The Ming imperial tombs are natural sites in a broad valley of Tianshou Mountain (Longevity of Heaven). Thirteen out of the 16 Ming emperors as well as 23 empresses were buried in this peaceful valley. It covers an area of 120 square kilometers (46 square miles), The Ming Tombs become the tomb area that was preserved the best and buried the most emperors in the world. Only the Changling and Dingling tombs are open to the public.

The Spirit Way
The Spirit Way is the road leading up to the tombs. The emperor's coffin would have been borne pass this way. The Spirit Way starts with a stele pavilion that's the largest stele in China. Then the funeral procession went through the Great Palace Gate, where officials had to dismount. Followed is a guard of 6 pairs of animals and 6 pairs of human figures that were carved from large white marbles. The Spirit Way ends at the Dragon and Phoenix Gates.

The Chang Ling
The Chiang Ling, the mausoleum of the third Ming emperor Zhu Li, is the most impressive tomb and the first to be built. This very fine structure is supported by 32 massive Nanmu wood pillars from the extreme southwest of China. The largest measure is about 1.3meters in diameter and 14 meters in height. Even passed over 500 years, tourists still can smell the fragrance from these special wooden materials. According to the record that just transporting the precious wood used to construct this tomb was five years' work for thousands of workers.

The Ding Ling
Ding Ling, the tomb of Emperor Wanli (reigned 1537-1619) and his two empresses, was under archaeological excavation in 1956.The vaulted marble palace was built underground about 27 meters deep. The middle chamber has three marble thrones; in front of them is a big blue china jar that would have been filled with sesame oil and lit to be used as ¡®the Ever Bright Lamp' before the tomb was sealed. The royal coffins were set in the back chamber. There are countless precious items were stowed in 26 chests and displayed with these coffins; among them is the gold imperial crown, one of the world's most rare treasures.
